ADMIRALTY LAW
Admiralty law, also called maritime law, is a unique and complex area of
the law over which the federal courts have exclusive jurisdiction. In
general, admiralty law governs the carriage of persons and property by water. This
area of the law deals with injury to persons and property in connection with
vessels in navigation on the navigable waters of the United States, and
commercial transactions involving transport of goods by such vessels.
The attorneys at Haglund Kelley Horngren Jones & Wilder have considerable experience in this area of the law, in part because of the firm’s Pacific Northwest location in close proximity to a major port, the Port of Portland. The firm has particular experience in the following areas:
- Jones Act Claims
- Maritime Personal Injury Law
- Vessel Arrests
- Collisions/Allisions
- Maritime Liens
- Cargo Claims
- Environmental Disputes
In our admiralty practice, we have represented river and bar pilots, crew members injured on oceangoing vessels, utility companies suffering damage to underwater cables, and shippers and cargo owners involved in commercial disputes. We have secured numerous, substantial maritime judgments and settlements. One particularly noteworthy case was a damages award in 2004 where we secured $11.6 million on behalf of a grievously injured Greek seaman.
